A German MOTORHEAD fan has been treated for a blood clot on his brain following a vigorous headbanging session at one of the bandâs shows.
The 50-year-old heavy metal devotee visited doctors in Hanover, Germany complaining of severe worsening headaches four weeks after attending a performance by the Ace Of Spades hit-makers.
Medical staff found the man had suffered a subdural haematoma, where blood collects under the outer membrane of the brain, and they carried out keyhole surgery to relieve the build-up.
Although there have been three other similar cases in the past, one of which led to death, doctors insist it is a very rare type of injury and not a reason for music fans to change their behaviour at concerts.
Dr Ariyan Pirayesh Islamian says, âWe are not against headbanging. The risk of injury is very, very low. But I think if (the patient) had gone to a classical concert, this would not have happened.
âThis case serves as evidence in support of Motorheadâs reputation as one of the most hardcore rock ânâ roll acts on Earth, if nothing else because of their musicâs contagious speed drive and the hazardous potential for headbanging fans to suffer brain injury.â
The manâs headaches subsided following the procedure.
Motörhead are typically classified as heavy metal, and their fusion of punk rock into the genre helped to pioneer speed metal and thrash metal. Their lyrics typically cover such topics as war, good versus evil, abuse of power, promiscuous sex, substance abuse, and, most famously, gambling.
The name âMotörheadâ is a reference to users of the drug amphetamine. The bandâs distinctive fanged-face logo, with its oversized boarâs tusks, chains, and spikes, was created by artist Joe Petagno in 1977 for the cover of the Motörhead album and has appeared in many variations on covers of ensuing albums. The fanged face has been referred to variously as âWar-Pigâ and âSnaggletoothâ. The band is ranked number 26 on VH1â²s 100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock
