Tour Bus Crash At Grand Teton National Park Injures 8

A bus carrying 26 Asian tourists flipped over on its side along a busy highway in Grand Teton National Park, with eight people being injured and hospitalized, officials said.

The other 19 people on the bus â€" that carried 26 tourists and one driver â€" were taken to a hospital but released after the crash Thursday afternoon, authorities said.

Two of the victims were airlifted to a medical center in Idaho Falls, Idaho, and were listed in fair condition Friday, a hospital spokesman said. Six were admitted to a hospital in Jackson, Wyoming where they were said to be in good or fair condition, a spokeswoman said.

Park spokeswoman Jackie Skaggs said that most of the passengers aboard the bus were from China. She didn’t know what other countries the passengers hailed from but said all were from Asia.

No other vehicles were involved in the bus crash, which took place on U.S. 89 north of Colter Bay Village on Jackson Lake. Authorities believe the 33-foot-long bus went off the pavement and the driver overcorrected, causing the bus to flip on its side, Skaggs said. She didn’t know how far the bus skidded once it flipped on its side.

The accident closed U.S. 89 for about five hours. The highway runs north-south through he park and connects Grand Teton National Park with Yellowstone National Park to the north. The bus was heading for Yellowstone when it crashed. The highway reopened at 9:20 p.m. Skaggs said.

The bus driver is among the 8 injured taken to the Jackson hospital. It is not immediately known if he has been discharged. His name hasn’t been released.

The driver stayed with the vehicle until all passengers had been attended to and was then taken to the hospital by a park ranger, Skaggs said. No charges have been filed.

The Father of Fracking – an Innovator and a Contradiction

Every schoolchild has heard of Thomas Alva Edison, Alexander Graham Bell, and George Washington Carver. These three are among the most well-known inventors to Americans. However, there is one inventor who does not receive the credit he deserves for creating something truly revolutionary.

Meet the Father of Fracking â€" George Mitchell

George Mitchell is dead now, having died in 2013, but his legacy continues to revolutionize America’s practices and policies. Who is George Mitchell, you ask? What did he invent that matters to us?

Image from Openclipart.org

Image from Openclipart.org

George Mitchell is the embodiment of the American Dream. His father was a poor Greek immigrant who operated a shoeshine shop in Galveston, Texas. George worked his way through Texas A&M University and ended up graduating at the top of his class in petroleum engineering. He eventually became a businessperson and philanthropist, giving generously to the city of Galveston and to various university research departments. He left a fortune of more than $2 billion when he died.

What is Fracking?

Undoubtedly you have heard of fracking. Energy officials, businesspeople, and environmentalists know all about fracking. It is the process of extracting natural gas from the shale rock layers deep beneath the Earth’s surface. Shale formations across the country hold enough natural gas to revolutionize our country’s energy situation. Though fracking produces hundreds of thousands of barrels of natural gas per day, it uses great quantities of water and chemicals, and may come with a hefty price tag of environmental, safety, and health hazards.

George Mitchell and Fracking

George Mitchell is thought of as the father of natural gas shale drilling, as he was the first to use hydraulic fracking to bring natural gas out of the Barnett shale field in Texas. Of course, inventors rarely invent something completely new and Mr. Mitchell is no exception. Inventors often build on the ideas and achievements of others through hard work, persistence, and a little extra ingenuity.

Fracking was first tried in the late 1940s and was researched by the Department of Energy in the 1970s. However, before Mr. Mitchell, it had not been used commercially to obtain natural gas from shale reserves. Mitchell, an expert geologist and his company Mitchell Energy drew wells for years without much success. With the gritty determination of an oil wildcatter and the gambler’s love of risk, he persevered in the face of defeat. Eventually, one of his wells proved that fracking could work and be financially viable. He became a rich and powerful Texas oilman, and the father of fracking. But, George was so much more than the stereotypical oilman.

George Mitchell â€" Innovator, Environmentalist and Believer in Regulation?

Humble and extremely generous, the man behind fracking, one of the most environmentally contentious topics of our time, may not have sided with environmentalists. He was also a member of the 1% who may have sided with liberals who believe in government regulation.

Mitchells’ charitable organization, The Cynthia & George Mitchell Foundation is devoted to supporting clean energy in Texas and has given to programs to study the scientific merit of sustainability. He was also the developer of The Woodlands, a planned community created in the 1970s. Its original plan called for protecting the environment and preserving trees.

In what may have been his last interview, in July of 2012, he told Christopher Helman of Forbes, “The administration is trying to tighten up controls. I think it’s a good idea. They should have very strict controls.” He was speaking about government controls on fracking.

As is the case with many individuals, especially those who gain great fame or wealth, they are a stew of contradictions. Mitchell was a believer in population control, yet had ten children. He believed and his foundation supports environmental concerns, yet he never invested in renewable energy. He was passionate about both fracking and sustainability, two seemingly incompatible ideas.

George Mitchell, an unknown inventor to most people, is responsible for what may be the most important innovation in world energy in the 20th and 21st centuries. Fracking is reshaping energy policies, attitudes, and battles. Like many inventors, his determination, grit, and belief in himself, gave the world something innovative and new. It is up to us to make the best of that innovation. Featured image from openclipart.org

Movie Theater Shooting Suspect Released From Jail On Bond

A retired Florida police captain charged in a movie theater shooting that killed one person, was released from jail on $150,000 bond Friday over the objections of the victim’s wife.

Curtis Reeves Jr. is accused of killing a fellow movie-goer who was texting during a movie. A trial date has not been set yet for Reeves, 71, who’s been in custody since January on second-degree murder charges in the death of Chad Oulson per NBC News.

After lawyers for Oulson’s widow argued that Reeves could be a threat to society, the circuit court still complied with the ruling and allowed Reeves bail, but confined him to his home.

A witness recounted Wednesday at a bail hearing for Reeves hearing him say, “I can’t believe what I’ve done,” after he killed Oulson.

Reeves repeated the statement after his victim started making “gurgling sounds” that signaled he was in bad shape, said Alan Hamilton, a Sumter County cop who was off-duty during the Jan 13. Screening of “Lone Survivor” in Wesley Chapel, Fla.

Hamilton also recalls seeing Reeves blow up at his wife when she criticized him for grabbing his gun.

“She postured and said, ‘That was no cause to shoot anyone,’ and he leaned back around and stuck his finger out as to scold her and said, ‘You shut your [expletive] mouth and don’t say another word,” Hamilton testified.

Hamilton also said that Reeves told him, “I just got hit by something and look at my eye,” but he didn’t see any visible injuries.

Reeves pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder at the hearing to determine if he could be released on bond, which ended up happening two days later. His attorneys argue he acted in self-defense and is no danger.

Texas Shooting Suspect Wheeled Out of Courtroom

Ronald Lee Haskell, the shooting suspect who is said to have killed six of his former relatives in Houston, Texas had to be wheeled away after collapsing in court Friday as he faced charges that he broke into the family’s home seeking his ex-wife and ended up killing two adults and four of their children execution-style.

Authorities said Haskell’s spree of violence took place in three states before ending the rampage in the Houston suburb of Spring per the LA Times.

Haskell, 33, appeared in court briefly and was taken away in a wheelchair and returned to Harris County Jail, where he is being held without bond, spokeswoman Tramesha Randall told The Times.

Haskell faces one count of capital murder/multiple murders, and prosecutors will present the case to a grand jury, Jeff McShan said, a spokesman for the Harris County district attorney’s office. The office has not yet decided whether to seek the death penalty.

A court-appointed defense attorney argues that Haskell had a history of mental issues and was not fully aware of his actions, McShan said.

Haskell is accused of breaking into the home of Stephen Stay, 39, and Katie Stay, 33, and their five children Wednesday evening, authorities said.

He was reportedly searching for his former wife, Melannie, who was not at the house. One of the children, Cassidy 15, tried to keep her former uncle out of the house, but he eventually broke down the door, holding the children at gunpoint until their parents returned home, police said. He tied up the children and shot the family members in the back of the head, execution style, police said.

Cassidy is being honored as a heroine for playing dead and calling 911 after Haskell left the house. She remains in critical condition with a fractured skull but is expected to make a full recovery, her family said.

Top 12 NFL Draft Busts of the Modern Era.

Ahead of the 1998 draft, the Colts were faced with the decision of choosing between two remarkable college athletes in Peyton Manning and Ryan Leaf. Both at the time were regarded as supremely gifted individuals that could turn around a franchise. Leaf was considered to have the “stronger arm and greater potential” while Peyton was regarded as the safer selection of the two, citing his maturity. At the time, both were thought to be locks to succeed in the NFL, it was more a matter of preference and system fit between the presume surefire quarterbacks.

The Colts holding the number one pick elected to go with Tennessee Quarterback, Peyton Manning, with Ryan Leaf falling to the San Diego Chargers. Leaf’s pro career wouldn’t have many high notes as he struggled mightily in his first pro season, eventually being benched for good. He missed his entire second year due to injury and his third season would be marred by poor play and character criticisms that eventually landed Leaf on the chopping block. Leaf spent the next two years trying to resurrect with three different teams before finally retiring at the age of 26 (wikipedia).

First Snapshots Of Photosynthesis in Action Captured by Researchers

A team of researchers were able to observe the first snapshots of photosynthesis in action as it split water into protons, electrons, and oxygen. The groundbreaking study published in Nature was carried out by an international team led by Arizona State University (ASU) scientists.

The first images of photosynthesis were captured by researchers at ASU. (Photo: Flickr)

Photosynthesis is the process that maintains Earth’s oxygen atmosphere and ensures air is made of things we need to breathe it and survive.

‘This study is the first step towards our ultimate goal of unraveling the secrets of water splitting and obtaining molecular movies of biomolecules,’ said Professor Petra Fromme, professor of chemistry and biochemistry at ASU and leader of the research team.
By observing the first stage of the process in action, the researchers say they’ve gotten a better understanding of how plants turn carbon dioxide into oxygen, and what may ultimately be an important step to a future where artificial plants are created that are more efficient than their organic siblings.

Early Earth contained no oxygen and was only converted to the oxygen-rich atmosphere we have today 2.5 billion years ago by the “invention” of the water splitting process that occurs in photosynthesis.

This water splitting process â€" known as photosystem II (PSII) â€" produces the oxygen we breathe and what ultimately keeps us alive.

The development of an ‘artificial leaf’ is one of the main goals for the ASU Center for Bio-Inspired Solar Fuel Production, which was the main supporter of this study.

Director of the center, Professor Devens Gust, explained that they are attempting to find a way to turn water into oxygen gas, hydrogen ions and electrons similar to how plants do.

‘Photosynthetic organisms already know how to do this, and we need to know the details of how photosynthesis carries out the process using abundant manganese and calcium,’ he said.

‘Once the mechanism of photosynthetic water oxidation is understood, chemists can begin to design artificial photosynthetic catalysts that will allow them to produce useful fuels using sunlight.’

Micheal Penn of New Castle Hid Heroin in Baby’s Diaper

A father being arrested Tuesday on an outstanding shoplifting warrant was spotted stuffing something into his 8-month-old son’s diaper when officers stopped him Tuesday while he was out walking with his three young children, New Castle police said Wednesday.

The officers took the father, identified as 25-year-old Michael N. Penn, into custody along with the children before discovering that what Penn was shoving in the infant’s diaper was actually 16 baggies of heroin, said Senior Lt. Adam Brams.

Penn, of the first block of Birkshire Road in the Oakmont Park community, was charged with shoplifting, three counts of endangering the welfare of a child, resisting arrest, heroin possession, possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia.

The incident began when New Castle City detectives investigated a shoplifting complaint Sunday afternoon at a Verizon store in New Castle.

Detectives viewed the store’s surveillance video and were able to identify Penn as the man who stole a Samsung tablet and another item from the store last month, Brams said.

Officers searching for Penn found him out walking with his children Tuesday and stopped to pick him up on the shoplifting warrant.

At the time, he was holding his 8-month-old son and 5-year-old daughter, while his 7-year-old son was riding a bicycle next to him, according to court records.

Officers, who saw Penn shoving something down his infant son’s pants, asked Penn to put down the two children.

Penn turned away from the officers and “began to cover his right hand and shove an unknown item into his youngest child’s front pants area,” police said in court records.

Officers were forced to grab Penn’s arms and pull them around his back to arrest him.

After Penn was in custody, officers noticed an unknown object popping out the front of the baby’s pants.

That’s where officers found a bundle of 16 baggies of heroin bound together, Brams said.

As the child was being checked out, Penn said “he was sorry and that he was scared,” which was why he tried to hide the drugs on the child, according to court records.

The total weight of the heroin was .24 grams, police said.

Upon further examination of the evidence collected, officers found an additional bag containing a Xanax pill, for which Penn did not have a prescription, police said.

The three children were turned over to their grandmother, and Family Services was notified, Brams said.

Penn was later released on $4,500 unsecured bail pending a court hearing.

The Republican National Convention – Why Cleveland?

The Republican National Committee recently selected Cleveland to host its 2016 National Convention. Why Cleveland, you may ask? The main reason they selected Cleveland is because it’s in Ohio, and Ohio has 18 very important electoral votes. The Republicans haven’t won Ohio since 2004 and it will certainly shape up to be a battleground state in 2016.

But why is Cleveland a bad choice for Republicans?  Well, there is a reason that the GOP has lost Ohio for the past few national elections. Cleveland and the Buckeye State had been battling with GOP policies for several years, and that brings us to the Top 5 reasons Cleveland is a bad choice for the 2016 Republican National Convention

Top 5 Reasons Cleveland is a Bad Choice for the Republican National Convention

Ohio Gov. John Kasich, a Republican is supporting a key Obamacare reform that will expand coverage to low-income residents. Wait a minute â€" a Republican governor supporting Obamacare? The Republicans should run far away from him and his state!  But, they aren’t. Despite the fact this expanded health coverage is expected to cut the amount of uninsured residents by two-thirds, Republicans will be flocking to the state in 2016. Ohio was one of the early success stories for Obama during the first open enrollment period, but Cleveland is still the place Republicans want to hold their pep rally prior to the 2016 election. I’m confused.

Photo from Wikipedia

Photo from Wikipedia

Cleveland is embracing equal rights for all individuals and families. Yes, gay rights is alive and well in Cleveland. The GOP’s 2012 platform came out against LGBT equality â€" will it be the same in 2016? The mayor of Cleveland, Frank G. Jackson is a member of Mayors for the Freedom to Marry, a group dedicated to marriage equality for all. The city has also adopted a domestic partnership registry to help protect the rights of those in same-sex marriages not yet recognized by the state of Ohio. And the GOP still wants to have their biggest love fest in this heathen city?  Go figure.

Cleveland is receiving stimulus funds and loving every dollar of it! Cleveland and its environs has received well over $1 billion in stimulus funding following the economic meltdown in 2008. This government money has funded numerous programs to help the people of Cleveland get back on their feet. Big government â€" who needs it? Apparently, the people of Cleveland do.

Cleveland is supporting rational gun control measures. Republicans apparently believe that any gun control measure is anathema to the Second Amendment, but apparently the mayor of Cleveland has a different view. He has joined with Mayors Against Illegal Guns to help support legislation to keep guns out of the deadly hands of criminals. The mayor and the chief of police have pushed for legislation that would create a gun-offender registry, a ban on the sale of guns to people under the age of 21, and an assortment of other restrictions on gun ownership. Doesn’t sound very GOP  to me.

Cleveland believes that climate change is real. While the GOP Congressional leadership seems to completely deny climate change despite a polluted mountain of evidence, the city of Cleveland is trying to reduce greenhouse gasses. The leadership launched the Cleveland Climate Action Plan in 2013 to lower greenhouse gas emissions by 80 percent from 2010 to 2050. Climate Action Plan? Sounds like a socialist attack on Republican freedoms to me.

So, believe it or not, this uber-liberal, gay rights-loving, climate-change believing, stimulus-enjoying city by the lake is going to see an invasion of  millions of Fox News-watching and Obama-bashing Republicans in 2016. Oh, Cleveland, say it ain’t so!

Louis Farrakhan Calls for African Americans to Establish Their own Court system

During a speech at Nation of Islam’s annual convention in Detroit, MI Louis Farrakhan claimed the U.S. court system is unfair to African Americans and in order to receive a fair trial African Americans need to establish their own court system. Farrakhan claims the judicial system is discriminatory and unfair to African Americans and they are not able to receive a fair trial under the current system.

“We want equal justice under the law,” Farrakhan said on the last day of the Nation of Islam’s annual convention, held in Detroit this year. “Our people can’t take much more. We have to have our own courts.”

The minister for the Nation of Islam believes that in order for African Americans to receive a fair trial they need to setup their own court system based off the teachings from the Bible and Quran.

Farrakhan rallied the crowd during his speech asking, “Is the court system fair?” When crowd replied no, he asked them to gather their soldiers against the unfair judicial system.

Louis Farrakhan is a black religious and social leader for the Nation of Islam, he has been praised and widely criticized for his often vexed political views and outspoken rhetorical style. He has been criticized for remarks that have been perceived as, anti-white and prejudiced against gays.

The minister in most recent years gives weekly online sermons for the Nation of Islam calling for the movement of black men to re-commit themselves to their communities and families.

Mobile Phones Kill Sperm?

People have been claiming that mobile phones give you brain cancer for years. According to the National Cancer Institute though, so far studies have not demonstrated “a consistent link between cell phone use and cancers of the brain, nerves, or other tissues of the head or neck.” New research conducted by researchers at the University of Exeter in the UK and recently published in the journal Environment International has revealed thatâ€"for menâ€"the real danger lies in keeping your smartphone in your pocket.

Mobile phones emit RF-EMR or radio-frequency electromagnetic radiation. The frequency is produced not only when a cell phone is active but also when the device is idle. As far back as 2009 scientists discovered that RF-EMR from mobile phones negatively impacted the quality of semen in rodents.

mobile phones

Mobile phones kill sperm?/Image: Wonderlust

This new study, however, focused on human males and their “ability to conceive” with a female.  A UE evolutionary biologist and the lead author of the report, Dr. Fiona Mathews, examined sperm samples from 1,492 subjects. Results indicated that in control groupsâ€"men who didn’t keep their mobile phones in their front pocketsâ€"“between 50 percent and 85 percent” of their sperm had “normal movement.”

Mathews and company discovered that the proportion dropped on average 8 percentage points when the men were exposed to the RF-EMR from their mobile phones.  Unlike previous pilot studies conducted years ago, the investigative team did not overstep their bounds.  The research indicates that small amounts of the radiation do not cause cell mutation. However, “over a prolonged period of time, RF-EMR can significantly affect a man’s bodyâ€"especially his sperm.

Mathews concluded: “This study strongly suggests that being exposed to radio-frequency electromagnetic radiation from carrying mobiles in trouser pockets negatively affects sperm quality. This could be particularly important for men already on the borderline of infertility and further research is required to determine the full clinical implications for the general population.”

Mantis Shrimp See UV Colors Far Beyond Human Vision Range

In an interesting new discovery, it has been found that while the highly advanced humans receive color information via three color receptors in their eyes, the mantis shrimp (Neogonodactylus oerstedii) has 12 such receptors.

Called “sea locusts” by ancient Assyrians, “prawn killers” in Australia and now sometimes referred to as “thumb splitters” â€" because of the animal’s ability to inflict painful gashes if handled incautiously.  Mantis shrimp sport powerful claws that they use to attack and kill prey by spearing, stunning, or dismemberment. In captivity, some larger species are capable of breaking through aquarium glass with a single strike

This means that the complex eyes of mantis shrimp are equipped with optics that generate ultraviolet (UV) color vision.

According to research reported in the Cell Press journal Current Biology on July 3, six of these color receptors differentiate five discrete wavelengths of ultraviolet light. The mantis shrimp has been found to make use of specially tuned, UV-specific optical filters in its color-detecting cone cells.

The mantis shrimp’s optical filters are found to be made of mycosporine-like amino acids (MAAs), or nature’s sunscreens as they are commonly called. These MAAs are usually employed to protect an organism from DNA-damaging UV rays and is commonly found in the skin or exoskeleton of marine organisms.

Quite interestingly, the mantis shrimp has incorporated them into powerful spectral tuning filters making it possible to spot organisms that absorb UV light.

Scientists have said that more research would be needed to properly understand the mantis shrimp’s complex visual perception, there is a possibility that UV detection could be utilized to visualize otherwise difficult-to-see prey on coral reefs.

Motorhead Fan Suffers Blood Clot From Headbanging

A German MOTORHEAD fan has been treated for a blood clot on his brain following a vigorous headbanging session at one of the band’s shows.

Photo: Wikipedia

Photo: Wikipedia

The 50-year-old heavy metal devotee visited doctors in Hanover, Germany complaining of severe worsening headaches four weeks after attending a performance by the Ace Of Spades hit-makers.

Medical staff found the man had suffered a subdural haematoma, where blood collects under the outer membrane of the brain, and they carried out keyhole surgery to relieve the build-up.

Although there have been three other similar cases in the past, one of which led to death, doctors insist it is a very rare type of injury and not a reason for music fans to change their behaviour at concerts.

Dr Ariyan Pirayesh Islamian says, “We are not against headbanging. The risk of injury is very, very low. But I think if (the patient) had gone to a classical concert, this would not have happened.

“This case serves as evidence in support of Motorhead’s reputation as one of the most hardcore rock ‘n’ roll acts on Earth, if nothing else because of their music’s contagious speed drive and the hazardous potential for headbanging fans to suffer brain injury.”

The man’s headaches subsided following the procedure.

Motörhead are typically classified as heavy metal, and their fusion of punk rock into the genre helped to pioneer speed metal and thrash metal. Their lyrics typically cover such topics as war, good versus evil, abuse of power, promiscuous sex, substance abuse, and, most famously, gambling.

The name “Motörhead” is a reference to users of the drug amphetamine. The band’s distinctive fanged-face logo, with its oversized boar’s tusks, chains, and spikes, was created by artist Joe Petagno in 1977 for the cover of the Motörhead album and has appeared in many variations on covers of ensuing albums. The fanged face has been referred to variously as “War-Pig” and “Snaggletooth”. The band is ranked number 26 on VH1′s 100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock

Has Society Convicted Cleveland Browns WR Josh Gordon Already?

The Cleveland Browns got some bad news Saturday morning. Wide receiver Josh Gordon had been arrested for driving while impaired in Raleigh, North Carolina.

@FOXSportsLive/Twitter

@FOXSportsLive/Twitter

There is never a good time or an acceptable reason for driving while impaired, but in the case of Josh Gordon it was even more vexing. After missing time due to a drug suspension last season he still managed to lead the league in receiving yardsâ€"and without much talent at quarterback or on the rest of the offense!

With a healthy Brian Hoyer (who only played two games last season before going down with a season ending injury) and rookie Johnny Manziel ready to battle it out for the right to throw Gordon the ball the future actually looks bright for the long suffering Browns fan base. That is, if Gordon doesn’t get suspended for the season for a second drug offense.

You would think that a player who was suspended twice from one team in college(Baylor) and tested positive for another (Utah) before entering the supplemental draft would have learned something, right?

Maybe he has.

Gordon was not pulled over because he was driving all over the road or anything. He was doing 50 miles per hour in a 35 mph area on U.S. 70 West in Raleigh. To put that in to perspective over 112,000 people are ticketed for speeding a day; over 41 million a year. Roughly one in every drivers will get a speeding ticket during the course of a given year.

North Carolina ranks No. 8 in the nation for most speeding tickets in a year.

This is not meant to absolve Gordon in any way, but to put the crime for which he was initially pulled over for in to perspective.

In regards to his DUIâ€"there is no excuse for doing it nor is there an acceptable amount of drinking a person could or should do before getting behind the wheel. For legal purposesâ€"and to put Gordon’s latest arrest in to perspectiveâ€"the details of his case are worth examining.

According to Raleigh police captain Tommy Klein for a person to be arrested for driving while impaired the must be ‘appreciably impaired.’ Officials have not commented on what tests if were given, but it has been reported by several news outlets that he was tested via a breathalyzer.

The legal limit in North Carolina is .08. Gordon did admit to having three drinks during the night.

When the news broke that he had been arrested popular opinion was quick to condemn Gordon because of his checkered past. While the facts of this case are still playing out there is reason to believe that he could very well be innocent in this case. His lawyer will argue calibration error and/or that breathalyzers are estimations. The argument is not uncommon either.

It would not be surprising to see the charge dismissed or plead down to reckless driving.

Does this absolve him of blame? Of course not, but it does mean that society should wait to hear all the facts before passing judgement.

200 Kidnapped Nigerian Girls Planned To Be Sold By Boko Haram

As Nigerians protest the kidnapping of more than 200 of their young girls, the leader of the group responsible for the kidnappings refuses to return them. Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau said that he plans to sell all of the kidnapped girls in a market to paying men. The group is a radical Islamic group that is also militant. They are claiming that Allah has commanded them to kidnap these girls and to sell them on a market.

Boko Haram has issues with the way that many Nigerian people live their lives. They are displeased with the Western (Us and European) influences in the country, and wish for things to return to a more orthodox Islamic way of life. Abubakar Shekau said that these young women who he kidnapped should not be in school, and that they should be married to men at their age. The groups viewpoint is not popular among the Nigerian people, who prefer to live a more contemporary and “civilized” way of life. Despite Nigeria’s progress towards Westernization, there are still some places there which observe Sharia Law and life a strict Islamic lifestyle. Attending school is still considered a luxury for many in the country, as there are places where the majority of people have never attended any school to receive a formal education.

Groups from all over the Western world have protested the groups plans to sell the girls, who were forcibly kidnapped a few weeks ago. People are hoping that the Nigerian government will be able to work out some sort of arrangement to return the girls safely to their families. There are currently 223 girls held captive by the group, but their actual condition is uncertain. There were some girls who were able to escape from the captors, and returned safely to their families.

Boko Haram has been responsible for many terrorist activities carried out in Nigeria. Their premise is that they are mostly operating under the will and direction of Allah, who is displeased with the direction that Nigeria is heading.

Facebook’s DeepFace as Accurate as Humans

DeepFace- Facebook’s New Face Recognition System May be as Accurate as Humans

A new complex artificial intelligence system has now been developed by Facebook, which may detect faces as accurately as humans. Called DeepFace, this new facial recognition system seems to have broken all conventions of earlier versions and is capable of rendering a 3D model of any human face based on its availability on Facebook.

DeepFace is believed to correctly identify a face from two different photos with a success rate of a whopping 97.25%, which is commendable considering other face recognition systems.

Facebook supposedly uses an algorithm called ‘Deep Learning’ to render a 3D model of a human face, and then uses over 120 million parameters to analyse the image, before detecting it.

Facebook Launches New Face Recognition System that Detects as Accurately as Humans

The researchers detailed the abstract as follows- ”In modern face recognition, the conventional pipeline consists of four stages: detect => align => represent => classify. We revisit both the alignment step and the representation step by employing explicit 3D face modeling in order to apply a piecewise affine transformation, and derive a face representation from a nine-layer deep neural network.”

While this new technology is still in its developmental phase, it seems Facebook is now attempting to strengthen its security and privacy features. DeepFace, with its stunning new technology, seems to have blurred the barrier between humans and technology, and

“The social and cultural implications of face recognition technologies are far reaching, yet the current performance gap in this domain between machines and the human visual system serves as a buffer from having to deal with these implications,” the researchers explained. DeepFace ”has closed the majority of the remaining gap.”

Herbalife Stock Falls after Senator Calls for Investigation

Herbalife stock fell a staggering 13% Thursday after U.S. Senator Ed Markey, a Democrat from Massachusetts, said he has called on both the Securities and Exchange Commission and the Federal Trade Commission to look into the nutritional supplement company for running a pyramid scheme after receiving several complaints from its constituents.

Herbalife is a multi-level marketing company where employees make money by selling Herbalife’s weight loss products and recruiting new sales representatives. These distributors take a portion of the sales from members they recruit, which is legal.

But the FTC says that multi-level companies would be deemed an illegal pyramid scheme if salespeople sell more products to other distributors rather than to the public or if they make more money from recruiting than they do from selling products per CNN News. The problem lies in that lower-level distributors may be stuck with unsold products.

Ackman has dubbed Herbalife a “pyramid scheme” for over a year now. The hedge fund titan first announced his short position, a bet that Herbalife stock would fall, in December 2012. In fact, he said that he thinks eventually the company’s stock will be worthless.

So after, Ackman has lost a substantial amount of money on his Herbalife investment because soon after he declared he was shorting it, billionaire activist investor Carl Icahn bought a big position in Herbalife. Icahn’s Icahn Enterprises is now Herbalife’s biggest shareholder with a close to 17% stake in the company.

According to released public records, Ackman did not make any donations to Markey’s campaign last year. Ackman did, however, make a $32,400 donation to Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee back in April 2013. Markey won a special election back in June to complete John Kerry’s term when Kerry resigned to become Secretary of State.

“Herbalife may be a purveyor of health and wellness products, but some of its distributors are suffering serious economic ill-health as a result of their involvement in the company,” Markey said in his statement. “I have serious questions about the business practices of Herbalife and their impact on my constituents, and I look forward to receiving responses to my inquiries.”

Labor board tries again to change union rules

By SAM HANANEL

WASHINGTON (AP) â€" Labor regulators are trying once again to streamline the process in which workers decide whether to join labor unions.

The National Labor Relations Board proposed rules Wednesday that would allow unions to hold workplace elections more quickly. That could make it easier for unions to organize and help them reverse decades of steep membership declines.

The board approved similar rules more than two years ago, but business groups challenged them in court and a federal judge ruled that board members had failed to follow proper voting procedures.

The NLRB was at the center of a bitter political dispute last year as Senate Republicans blocked President Barack Obama from appointing new board members. Republicans ended delaying tactics last summer in a deal that allowed Obama to fill all five board seats.

When Will Flappy Bird Return? Developer Dong Nguyen Says Game To Return In August

The Flappy Bird return has been announced as developer Dong Nguyen says that his game will no longer be on hiatus come August. Nguyen, who took his game down suddenly after an abundance of success, told reporters that his game will be revamped and available for download in all mobile application stores in just a few months.

Dong Nguyen told CNBC’s Kelly Evans that his game will be re-released on mobile application stores like Google Play and iOS App Store this August. Nguyen took his free game off the market earlier this year despite the fact that millions downloaded the simple yet addictive game. According to Nguyen, he took the game down due to its negative effects on the players such as addictiveness and frustration.

However, the game that accumulated over $50,000 in daily ad revenue will soon be back on the market with new features. Nguyen told Evans that some of the new features will include multiplayer and possibly new levels. The app developer also mentioned that he formatted the game to make it less addictive, although he did not explain what changes were made in that regard.

When Evans asked Nguyen why it was so important that the game not be addictive, the Flappy Bird creator replied by saying:

“I think people should spend time doing something more productive.”

No specific date has been given for the Flappy Bird return. Meanwhile, those seeking to download the original can find the download file on numerous sites with the help of search engines.

Free Pot For The Poor

Cannabis, marijuana, potâ€"it has many names and as political attitudes continue to change and more research is done medical marijuana is in the news more and more every day. The latest pot piece is set in Berkeley, Calif. According to various sources including KWGN and CNN, pot dispensaries currently operating there may soon be required by law to provide free pot to the poor.

This follows the recent initial approval of a specific ordinance by City Council. Councilman Darryl Moore, the man behind the free pot giveaway, said: “Basically the City Council wants to make sure that low income, homeless, indigent folks have access to their medical marijuana, their medicine.”

pot

The Berkeley Patients Group, however, is already providing free pot to the poor. In fact, they have been doing so for over 15 years. Sean Luse of Berkeley Patients Group stated: “We’ve found out over the years is one of the cruel realities is that when you get sick and you have a serious illness is that it’s often hard to keep a job, it can be hard to keep your income up, so those people really need the help the most.”

This new ordinance specifically requires that medical marijuana dispensaries reserve a minimum of 2 percent of the pot they market annually and give it to “low-income patients” free of charge. More importantly, this cannabis must reportedly be “the same high-quality marijuana given to regular-paying customers.”

Moore added: “Medical cannabis can be very expensive. And so we think this is the responsible thing to do for those who are less fortunate in our community.” The measure will be up for final approval next week and has drawn some dissenting opinions.

One woman noted that giving free medical-grade pot to the homeless and low income patients is asking for trouble. “It’s a big deal because it could get into the wrong hands.”

An anonymous resident concluded: “Obviously people could sell fee pot for money for alcohol and who know what else. They don’t need to sell it for food because they already get free food. Cigarettes and booze might be harder to get of course.” Nevertheless, what may seem to be a highly controversial issue in another time or another place is not stirring up a lot of trouble in the college town of Berkeley, California.

President Obama Dubbed As Worst President Of the Last 12

President Obama is coming in at number one in a new poll, but this poll isn’t one he wants to win.

He has won the top pick for the “worst president since World War II” â€" also known as the worst president out of the last 12 â€" according to a poll American voters released Wednesday by Quinnipiac University in Hamden, Conn.

president obama

President Obama comes in first place as the worst president of the last 12 in a new poll.
(Photo: Wikipedia)

President Obama came in first place with 33 percent, followed closely behind by George W. Bush with 28 percent. Third was Richard Nixon with 13 percent, who resigned in disgrace 40 years ago.

“Over the span of 69 years of American history and 12 presidencies, President Barack Obama finds himself with President George W. Bush at the bottom of the popularity barrel,” says Tim Malloy, assistant director of the Quinnipiac poll.

The top postwar presidents include Ronald Reagan (35 percent), Bill Clinton (18 percent), and John F. Kennedy (15 percent).

President Obama does have one unfair advantage, asking voters to rate the current president against his predecessors. Sitting presidents typically face daily criticism for challenges they are not supposedly “measuring up to”, and voter scan be harsh, even when a president’s ability to navigate a problem is limited. Typically, it has been shown that as soon as president leaves office, his favorability ratings get a boost.

And historians say, one should wait a few decades before ranking a president for the ages.

“Presidents often look different 20 or 30 years later, because when you wait that period of time you know what was important and what was not,” historian Michael Beschloss said in 2003, PBS notes.

In a face-off between Obama and second President Bush, the score was nearly even. Some 39 percent of voters said Obama has been a better president, while 40 percent say he has been worse.

Obama’s best issue, per those polled, is the environment. Fifty percent approve his handling of the environment, while 40 percent disapprove.

Plants Hear Their Parts Being Eaten

According to a group of researchers at the University of Missouri in Columbia, Missouri, while plants don’t have what we think of as ears, a flowering plant similar to mustard, Arabidopsis, may very well recognize the sounds of a hungry caterpillar. Furthermore, once the plant acknowledges the munching menace it secretes other oils that caterpillars do not enjoy.

Heidi Appel, lead researcher of a new study published in Oecologia, said: “Previous research has investigated how plants respond to acoustic energy, including music. However, our work is the first example of how plants respond to an ecologically relevant vibration We found that feeding vibrations signal changes in the plant cells’ metabolism, creating more defensive chemicals that can repel attacks from caterpillars.”

plants

While it was previously known that plants respond to touch and even to the wind, the UM group’s research revealed that plants can actually be selective in terms of what sounds to which they choose to notice. The investigative team played various recordings for the plants and noted their reactions.

The vibrations of the caterpillar’s munching were the only sounds to cause the plants to excrete extra mustard oil. Recordings of wind and other vibrations received no such response from the plant.

Rex Cocroft, study co-author, stated: “This indicates that the plants are able to distinguish feeding vibrations from other common sources of environmental vibration.” Cocroft and company believe that knowing more about how plants deal with “ecological threats” could aid botanists in creating plants with better “defense mechanisms.”

Appel added: “Once you understand these things you can mess around with it in plant breeding through conventional methods or biotech approaches to modify plants so they are more responsive in the ways you want to make them more resistant against pests. That’s the practical application one day.”

The group also hopes to determine how the plants detect vibrations. Appel and Cocroft believe it has something to do with a protein named mechanoreceptors. Mechanoreceptors react to distortion or pressure although details remain a mystery. Appel concludes: “Finding that out is our next step.”

Uruguayan Football Association Plans on Defending Luis Suarez

The Uruguayan Football Association was put in a tough decision after one of its playersâ€"Luis Suarezâ€"appeared to bite an opponent during World Cup play.

@LivEchonews/Twitter

@LivEchonews/Twitter

He is one of their players so in a way they are obligated to defend him, but the question is to what degree or how hard they try. After all, we are not talking about a first-time offender. He is more like a third-time offender (his latest victim being Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini during Tuesday’s Italy vs. Uruguay match).

How do you defend a repeat offender?

Easyâ€"deflect, deflect, deflect.

FIFA has announced that he will be facing charges for the incident and the organization gave the UFA till 5 PM Wednesday to respond. It appears that their defense is going to be two-fold.

Firstâ€"make accusations of possible collusion.

“We’ve prepared another video of the game in which we discovered there was other behavior similar to Suarez’s in the game which did not generate a similar reaction from the press,” Uruguayan FA president Wilmar Valdez said (via the Guardian).

Team captain Diego Lugano has been much more open about accusing others of targeting Suarez.

“Everybody knows the British media have an issue with Suárez,” he said. “It must sell newspapers in England. Otherwise you wouldn’t be here. Yesterday Uruguay played against Italy and Saturday it will play Colombia. I don’t know what a British journalist is doing talking about Suárez. It must be popular with the British media. I don’t see another explanation.”

So pretty much they are going to argue he didn’t do it and that he’s being targeted because of his past. He’s been suspended twice before for biting people (seven games and ten games).

‘Better Call Saul’ Will Take Place Before, During and After ‘Breaking Bad’

We Just Can’t Get Enough of ‘Saul’ (Bob Odenkirk)!

Producer Peter Gould has revealed that the upcoming ‘Breaking Bad’ spin-off ‘Better Call Saul’ may possibly include Walter White and Jesse Pinkman. Breaking Bad producer Peter Gould recently sat down with NY Daily News and discussed the upcoming spin-off Better Call Saul. During the interview, he reveals that it will move back and forth over several decades and that we will possibly see the return of several fan loved characters including Walter White (Bryan Cranston) and Jesse Pinkman (Aaron Paul).

“One of the great things about having a time line which is flexible is that perhaps some of it takes place before ‘Breaking Bad,’ during ‘Breaking Bad,’ and after ‘Breaking Bad.’ That gives us the ability to bring back characters that were killed on ‘Breaking Bad’.”

He went on to explain how the show will differ from the original series. “We want to make a show that stands on it own, is its own story and is a brand extension. We think we have a story that is worth making. … We could never dream of the kind of success that ‘Breaking Bad’ had and the love we got from the fans. But, at a certain point you have to do the best job you can and tell the best story that entertains you, get a good response and hope people like it.” He wraps up the interview by expressing his excitement about being picked up for a second season by AMC. “It’s tremendous for us, because we get to plot out two seasons. And the way we work is similar to ‘Breaking Bad’ as it is very serialized and each episode builds on the last. And that gives us a much bigger canvas to play with.” Better Call Saul will premiere on AMC in early 2015.

Several New Colorado Laws Take Effect Tuesday

June 30th 2014

Measures passed by Colorado lawmakers this year that do everything from giving law enforcement officials an expanded window of time to solve hit-and-run homicide cases to outlawing so-called “revenge porn,” will become law Tuesday.

Wikipedia

Wikipedia

Nearly 425 bills passed through this year’s legislative session and about 50 will become law Tuesday, while about 230 have already taken effect. The remaining bills will become law at a later date.

Among the new statutes is one that makes illegal the online posting of intimate pictures or videos of former romantic partners. Known widely as “revenge porn,” Colorado is one of several states this year to pass a bill outlawing the practice. Under the law it would be a misdemeanor to publish on the Internet explicit images of someone without their consent.

“The effects of someone posting intimate photos online can be devastating to the victim, but now there will be serious consequences for the perpetrators of this horrible practice,” said state Rep. Amy Stephens, R-Monument, the bill’s prime sponsor. “Women, and men, of Colorado will be able to seek justice against someone attempting to cause them harm by publishing personal and private images online.”

A separate measure that becomes law gives police more time to solve hit-and-run vehicular homicide cases by doubling the statute of limitations from five years to 10 years. Earlier this year, lawmakers passed a bill â€" known as Medina Alert â€" which became law in March and allows authorities to better broadcast hit-and-run information quickly on electronic highway signs and via the media.

Another bill that focuses on public safety and becomes law Tuesday stiffens sentencing for the worst cases of sexual assaults against children.

The law, modeled after Florida’s Jessica’s Law, would stagger sentences that range from 10 to 48 years for child predators based on the seriousness of the crime and classification of the felony. Lawmakers voted unanimously in support of the bill.

“Any time we can make the community safer from violent sexual offenders, we need to do it. And this law is reflection of improved public safety,” said Rep. Mike Foote, D-Lafayette, who sponsored the bill that now becomes law.

Other notable laws that will take effect Tuesday include:

• A law that limits the fees a public agency can charge for retrieval of requested public records under the Colorado Open Records Act.

• The creation of a $9 million grant program to fund scientific research to better understand the medicinal impacts of marijuana.

• A law increasing funding for a property tax and rent rebate program for low-income seniors and couples who qualify.

• When a child is conceived as a result of rape, a law that allows courts to sever any access the rapist may have to the survivor and her child.

Secret Study Conducted On Facebook Users

According to a study recently published by The PNAS (Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences) social networks such as Facebook can impact one’s emotions. A Facebook data scientist and two additional researchers conducted a now controversial secret study over a one-week period in 2012 which reportedly played with the emotions of approximately 689,000 unknowing participants.

Online sources(such as USA Today) indicate that the trio of researchers were attempting to discover if “exposure to emotional content led people to post content that was consistent with the exposure â€" thereby testing whether exposure to verbal affective expressions leads to similar verbal expressions, a form of emotional contagion.”

facebook

Secret Study Conducted On Facebook Users/Image: InvestigateCo.

James Grimmelmann, a law professor at the University of Maryland and one of the investigative team, noted that one of the experimental groups has positive terms such as “nice” and “love” filtered out of their news feeds. Facebook users with “less positive content” in their news feeds included more negative words in their various status updates.

Grimmelmann reported: “This, however, was not an observational study. It was an experimental studyâ€"indeed, a randomized controlled trialâ€"in which participants were treated differently. We wouldn’t tell patients in a drug trial that the study was harmless because only a computer would ever know whether they received the placebo.

He added: “The unwitting participants in the Facebook study were told (seemingly by their friends) for a week either that the world was a dark and cheerless place or that it was a saccharine paradise. That’s psychological manipulation, even when it’s carried out automatically. This is bad, even for Facebook.”

The outrage spawned by the study inspired one of the researchers to make a statement. Study co-author Adam Kramer said: “The goal of all of our research at Facebook is to learn how to provide a better service. Having written and designed this experiment myself, I can tell you that our goal was never to upset anyone.”

In a post on Facebook he concluded: “I can understand why some people have concerns about it, and my co-authors and I are very sorry for the way the paper described the research and any anxiety it caused. In hindsight, the research benefits of the paper may not have justified all of this anxiety.”

Ekso, ReWalk: New Wearable Robot Exoskeletons to Put Wheelchairs to Shame

ReWalk- a new wearable robot that’s been approved by the FDA, surely knows how to live up to its name! This new device may now help paraplegics to walk by using high-tech braces.

The device makes use of computerized sensors to support the paraplegic user, and mimic the natural feeling of walking. The device currently costs around $69, 500, and is what you could call a new exoskeleton!

And that’s not just it- there’s another device by the name of Ekso, which allows people to walk using robotic technology. While there is a lot to be worked on these devices considering their obvious shortcomings of not being able to last long on batteries and them taking an hour to walk a mile, they do appear to be promising enough to grab the attention of many.

Leg Braces, Exoskeletons, Therapy - Are Wheelchairs About to Become a Thing of the Past?

Leg Braces, Exoskeletons, Therapy â€" Are Wheelchairs About to Become a Thing of the Past?

The users of these exoskeleton are expected to experience man benefits including better blood circulation, better respiration and relief from pain. There are also many psychological benefits that this exoskeleton has to offer- the ability to stand with confidence, look into people’s eyes while talking etc.

The exoskeleton basically works on electrical stimulation of the spinal cord, which allows paraplegic patients to move again. The epidural stimulator also mimics signals passed dwon from the body, which also restores motor ability to the patients.

“Because of epidural stimulation, they can now voluntarily move their hips, ankles and toes. This is groundbreaking for the entire field and offers a new outlook that the spinal cord, even after a severe injury, has great potential for functional recovery,” Claudia Angeli, from the Kentucky Spinal Cord Injury Research Center (KSCIRC) at the University of Louisville, explained.

This new exoskeleton may actually make wheelchairs the thing of the past, and will allow patients to completely use it to walk around.

“It will be incredible for me to regain independence, to use the system to walk and stand on my own,” Derek Herrera, a paraplegic and captain in the Marine Corps, stated in a press release. The soldier will be one of the first people in the nation to own the ReWalk system.

DARPA Develops Spider-Man Tech

DARPA or Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency recently demonstrated gecko-like equipment capable of making a soldier climb walls like Spider-Man. Financed by a 2009 grant, the new tools, called Geckskin, are part of the Draper Laboratory and University of Massachusetts’ Z-Man project.

Matt Goodman, the program manager for Z-Man, stated the “gecko is one of the champion climbers in the animal kingdom, so it was natural for DARPA to look to it for inspiration in overcoming some of the maneuver challenges that U.S. forces face in urban environments. The challenge to our performer team was to understand the biology and physics in play when geckos climb, and then reverse-engineer those dynamics into an artificial system for use by humans.”

DARPA

DARPA equipped a 218-pound subject with an additional 50 pounds of weight and had him climb two-and-a-half stories up a glass surface utilizing the new gecko-inspired paddles. The man was also equipped with a safety belt but did not need it.

Goodman and company explained that a gecko’s toes are equipped with often millions of microscopic hairs named setae. Molecular interactions dubbed “van der Waals forces” are multiplied and provide an incredibly strong hold. The UMass Amherst investigators believed it was more than the creature’s toes at work but the entire foot. So they duplicated it.

Goodman noted: “This allows the pad to drape over a surface to maximize contact. Further, as in natural gecko feet, the fabric is woven into a synthetic tendon yielding a design that maintains stiffness and rotational freedom.”

DARPA believes these paddles could be a boon to soldiers in the field because they generally try for “the high ground” but ladders and rope have not significantly developed over the years. Goodman concluded: “They also only allow for sequential climbing whereby the first climber often takes on the highest risk.” And that their research on climbing is ongoing.

North Korea Calls Seth Rogen and James Franco’s New Movie ‘The Interview’ An ‘Act of War’

The Interview

North Korea is calling Seth Rogen and James Franco’s latest film, ‘The Interview’ an act of war. They are demanding that the film be banned from theater release.

The film that stars the two funnymen centers around two journalist who are told by the CIA to assassinate the Korean president. North Korean leader, Kim Jong Un is more than displeased by the film and is planning ‘merciless’ retaliation upon its release.

A foreign ministry called Rogen a “gangster filmmaker”. Kim Myong-chol, who is the North Korean government’s unofficial spokesman is calling the United States desperate.

“There is a special irony in this story line as it shows the desperation of the US government and the American society,” said Myong-chol during an interview with Telegragh. “A film about assassination of a foreign leader mirrors what he US has done in Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria and Ukraine. And let us not forget who killed (President John F.) Kennedy â€" Americans. In fact, President Obama should be careful in case the US military wants to kill him as well.”

In conclusion he went on to say, “The act of making and screening such a movie that portrays an attack on our top leadership is a most wanton act of terror and act of war, and is absolutely intolerable,” according to AFP.

There is no official word on rather or not the comedy ‘The Interview’ will be banned. The Columbia pictures film is still set to be released this coming October.

Rogen appeared to not budge by the recent threat from the Korean government. He tweeted, “Apparently Kim Jong Un plans on watching #TheInterview. I hope he likes it!!”

Can Egypt’s Army Cure AIDS?

At a press conference yesterday the Egyptian military announced that they would postpone the public use of its “complete cure” virus-curing device for another six months for further testing. Despite skepticism voiced by experts in the scientific community, the Egyptian military pushed their publicity people announced that they would be using their new blood purification/cure device to treat patients in military hospitals as of June 30.

The Egyptian military had introduced its cure device earlier this year claiming it could diagnose and treat diseases caused by viruses such as hepatitis C and AIDS. Statistically-speaking Egypt had eight million cases of hepatitis C in 2008. That’s approximately 10 percent of the population. According to the World Health Organization HIV affects more than 35 million people across the globe.

Those who attended a demonstration of the cure device earlier in the year were left with questions. They told the press they were not satisfied with the explanations concerning the technology. Massimo Pinzani, the University College London Institute for Liver and Digestive Health director, attended the demonstration but was not able to test the device himself. He noted that “in the absence of convincing scientific and technical basis, the device should be viewed as a potential fraud.”

Madiha Khatab, who is part of the medical team and oversees the project, stated that the new device is presently “being used to treat 160 patients.” She reported that the clinical trials would run for a year and there was another six months planned for patient recovery and yet another six months for follow up. She noted that the clinical trials demonstrated excellent results adding that their group will be applying for “an international accreditation” of the new cure device.

Major General Gamal El-Serfy, the medical director of the armed forces concluded: “Scientific integrity dictates that the announcement of the complete cure device should be postponed until the trial period for those currently receiving the cure is over” and the health of their citizens is “more important than anything.”

50000-Year-Old Poop: Neanderthals Ate Veggies

According to a new report published this week in the journal PLOS ONE, Scientists from, Spain’s University of La Laguna in The Canary Islands discovered what very well could be the world’s oldest human feces on top of an ancient campfire in Spain. This discovery reveals that Neanderthals may very well have not been carnivores.

Mind you, the research team had not come to Spain looking for defecation. When they arrived at El Salt, the Neanderthal site, they were hoping to discover food scraps and cooking utensils. They were investigating the ancient fire pits there hoping to find some insights on Neanderthal food preparation and details about how Neanderthals cooked food.

neaderthals

Neaderthal?Image: CryptoCrew

As it turned out, the only food scraps they came across were at the end of the digestion process. They were surprised to discover fecal matter in an area once reserved for food preparation; they doubt the Neanderthal in question defecated over an active fire. The research team believes that the cooking area had been converted to a bathroom.

Ainara Sistiaga, lead author and one of the researchers from ULL said: “I thought they were cooking in there, so I was looking for lipids from cooking. I don’t think they were using (the location as a toilet) when the fire was active.”

Chemical analysis of the petrified poop showed evidence of both animal and plant matter. This revelation is seen as highly significant because Neanderthals were once considered strictly meat-eaters. While plant matter had been discovered in between teeth found in Neanderthal caves scientists continued to have doubts. The leaves were said by some scientists to have gotten there incidentally from Neanderthals eating an animal who had eaten the leaves themselves.

Sistiaga stated that the fecal matter “is the perfect evidence, because you’re sure it was consumed.” It is becoming increasingly clear that Neanderthals were omnivores not carnivores. Sistiaga concluded: “We believe Neanderthals probably ate what was available in different situations, seasons, and climates.”

“We have photos of a junior Migaloo from a few years ago, but we haven’t seen him since so we don’t know if he survived the South Ocean,” said Peterson.

“But there is a 100% white whale we’ve seen photographic proof of in Norway, so Migaloo isn’t quite as unique as we once thought.”

Migaloo was first seen in 1991 when he was a juvenile and researchers believe he is now in his 20s.
He doesn’t show up every year, but his journey is part of the humpbacks’ annual migration from the Antarctic to their breeding grounds along the Great Barrier Reef.

“The helicopter crews are all out photographing him today,” said Oskar Peterson. “He’s giving us all quite a parade this year.”

Migaloo passed by Cronulla in Sydney’s south on Thursday afternoon and would soon be seen by whale watchers at Bondi Beach, Peterson said.

Spotters of the whale are sharing sightings, photos and video at his Twitter account, Migaloo1.

Male humpbacks can travel up to 140 kilometers (87 miles) a day during their migration, according to experts.
Researchers warn fans to steer clear â€" at least 500 meters away at all times â€" to ensure the whale’s survival.

Too much noise and chasing can disturb him and cause him to use precious energy he needs for migration.
But whale watchers may be able to enjoy Migaloo for decades.

Humpback whales are believed to survive as long as 90 years in the wild.

Officials: End of Flight 370 Blamed On Oxygen Depletion

A new update Thursday from Australian officials regarding Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 states that the ending of the flight is best explained by all 239 passengers and crew members becoming unresponsive, possibly due to oxygen depletion, based on the plane’s steady altitude, loss of radio communications, and other factors.

Australian authorities also believe someone onboard Flight 370 switched on the autopilot system deliberately after the plane turned toward the southern Indian Ocean, where it ran out of fuel and subsequently crashed.

This is more likely than other scenarios such as the plane’s systems malfunctioning, a stall or sudden loss of flight controls, they said. But they stressed that these conclusions are not supported by hard evidence, and that Malaysian authorities heading the overall probe may not share their assumptions.

The questions that still remain are why Flight 370 deviated sharply from its planned route to Beijing from Kuala Lumpur, or what might have caused the oxygen depletion, if that is indeed what occurred.

Along with the report, the Australian Transport Safety Bureau moved the search area for the third time since the flight seemingly disappeared. The new search is slated to restart in August as much as 600 miles south of the previous underwater focus.

The highest-priority search areas were calculated in part by relying on aircraft maneuvers in previous commercial-plane crashes and the assumption that everyone aboard Flight 370 were victims of oxygen deprivation, or hypoxia.

No theory has been given to the cause of hypoxia. The ATSB said the assumption was made in part because the plane appeared to travel for a long period of time â€" about five hours â€" without any radio communication or dramatic turns in deviations, and assumingly without significant altitude changes.

Martin Dolan, chief commissioner at the ATSB, downplayed the possibility that the autopilot could have been activated automatically, perhaps in the wake of some massive systems failure, however he didn’t provide an in depth explanation.

Alcohol Consumption Causes 88,000 Deaths Yearly

The study appears today (June 26, 2014) in the CDC’s journal Preventing Chronic Disease.

Excessive alcohol consumption remains a leading cause of premature death in the United States, responsible for 1 in 10 deaths among working-age adults, according to a new study from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Researchers used the CDC’s Alcohol-Related Disease Impact (ARDI) online application to estimate total number of deaths that were attributable to alcohol among U.S. adults ages 20 to 64, from 2006 through 2010. They also examined years of potential life lost across the U.S. by gender and age.

Excessive alcohol use led to nearly 88,000 deaths per year over the study period, and shortened the lives of those who died by about 30 years on average, said study researcher Dafna Kanny of the CDC. “In total, there were 2.5 million years of potential life lost each year due to excessive alcohol use,” she said.

The number of alcohol-related deaths have increased by around 12,000 since 2004, the year a previous CDC study was conducted, Kanny said.

Alcohol is linked with deaths both from acute causes, such as car accidents and falls, and deaths from chronic diseases.

Deaths due to alcohol-related car accidents reached nearly 13,000 per year during the study period, according to the report.

Among the chronic diseases that alcohol can cause, the most common cause of death was alcoholic liver disease (14,000 deaths yearly), followed by liver cirrhosis (7,800 deaths yearly) and alcohol dependence syndrome (3,700 deaths yearly), according to the study.

Most of the deaths that were related to excessive alcohol consumption (71 percent) involved males, Kanny said. “Men are more likely than women to drink excessively, especially binge drinking, having five or more alcoholic drinks in one occasion,” she said. “Among drivers in fatal motor vehicle crashes, men are almost twice as likely as women to have been intoxicated.”

According to the study, New Mexico had the highest number of alcohol-related deaths, with approximately 51 deaths yearly per 100,000 people, while New Jersey had the lowest, with around 19 deaths per 100,000 people.

The results of this study are consistent with similar studies conducted on a global level, and reflect the substantial effect that excessive drinking has on life span and loss of productivity, Kanny said.

Premature deaths due to alcohol consumption, along with the reduced earnings by heavy drinkers, were responsible for 72 percent of the estimated $223.5 billion in economic costs due to excessive alcohol consumption in the U.S. in 2006, she said.

Kanny offered suggestions on what can be done to decrease the number of fatalities due to excessive drinking. “Health care providers can use alcohol screening and counseling to help people who are drinking too much,” she said. “Adults can set a good example for young people by not drinking excessively, and by not providing underage youth with alcohol.”

Other strategies, she added, include increasing taxes on alcoholic beverages, reducing the number of retails outlets that sell alcoholic drinks, and holding alcohol retailers liable for injuries and damage following illegal service to intoxicated or underage consumers.
