Welcome to the latest edition of The Why. âWhy are sharks always the bad guys?â you ask? Good question. Whether itâs in comic books, Disney cartoons, television, major motion pictures or even musical theatre sharks do get a bad rap in popular culture.
The people at agree. They note: âSharks have earned a reputation as one of the most well-known animal villains for their unpredictable nature and danger towards human beings. In real life, sharks are one of the worldâs most important animals in natureâs ecology.â
If thatâs true then why are sharks always the bad guys? The Villains Wikia people think that despite their importance to the eco system âthey are still popularly portrayed as villainous figures, due to their aggressive behavior.â (Thatâs certainly something upon which pop culture focuses.)
Why are sharks always the bad guys? If you caught a recent episode of the TV program âTechKnowâ you know that they too acknowledge that sharks âhave been vilified as the worldâs ultimate killing machine. â
They also believe that the sharkâs âbad boy image is all wrong.â Â One of their recent guests, Jim Abernethy is the owner of a scuba-diving business that specializes in âshark dives near West Palm Beach in Florida.â Abernathy (photographically) shoots sharks.
He told the âTechKnowâ team: âI havenât had a single aggressive shark in the 35 years Iâve been swimming with them on a daily basis. We have 400 billion years of sharks shaping our oceanâs health, and in the last 50 yearsâ"in my watchâ"we have literally destroyed it.â
Abernethy obviously loves sharks. He thinks everyone should love them. That is reportedly one of the reasons he is now known as âa pioneer in cage-free shark divingâ and why he makes a living offering others the opportunity to encounter sharks âup close in the wild.â
Why are sharks always the bad guys? They are portrayed as bad guys because most of us donât know enough about them. Theyâve gotten a bad rap in the media according to experts such as Abernathy. âItâs up to those of us who really know whatâs going on to protect themâ and to change the misconception.
Why are sharks always the bad guys? Now you know.
