Welcome to the latest edition of The Why.
Everywhere you look the media is pushing you telling you who to follow, what to watch and when to watch it.   Youâre even sometimes told how to do it all. Truth is, here at American Live Wire we do a bit of that too. The big difference is we also tell you why.
You ask the questions. We provide the answers.
âWhy is the US government working to get rid of GPS?â you ask? Ah, someone has been keeping up on current events! Yes, itâs true that DARPA or the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency has a lot of projects they are working on for the Department of Defense. One of them involves GPS (Global Positioning Satellites).
DARPA has, in fact, been working for the government since 1958. It has been instrumental in the creation of a lot of technological marvels including the Internet which was at one time called the ARPAnet. They have also been behind such things as unmanned aerial vehicles, Spider-man tech and both animal-form and humanoid robots.
Then why is the US government working to get rid of GPS? Wouldnât that be something thatâs right up their alley? Yes, it would.
In fact, GPS is something else in which they have been involved. The newest pet project is named C-SCAN and reportedly has the theoretical âpotential to improveâ and maybe even âreplace GPS.â
Why is the US government working to get rid of GPS? They are trying to get rid of the âoldâ GPS to make way for the new and improved GPS.
Why is the US government working to get rid of GPS? They are trying to get rid of GPS because they might be able to perfect something better.
Donât hold your breath though, boys and girls. Word on the web is that this is a relatively old idea. According to one online poster the trouble âis that integration error builds up very rapidly (because it is actually âdouble integrationâ). . . âSo you have to keep resetting the position estimate.â
While the folks at DARPA feel they can deal with this issue, many outside the system who have studied in the field believe that while C-SCAN has potential in terms of weapons systems use the inertial guidance devices that DARPA is involved with require âresettingâ due to the fact that the timing isnât âof the required accuracyâ and very well may never be. Obviously, without truly âaccurate time none of the rest of it works unless it is reset by the GPS systemâ ergo it seems impossible to âget rid of GPS. â
Why is the US government working to get rid of GPS? They are doing so because they currently have the funding to try. They are doing so because âhope springs eternal.â
Why is the US government working to get rid of GPS? Now you know.
You ask the questions. We provide the answers.
