The active ingredient in Ecstasy is MDMA, also known as âMolly.â MDMA was initially developed as an anti-depressant, and is currently undergoing clinical trials as a part of therapy for post-traumatic stress disorder and anxiety.
While pure MDMA may have once been a widely used illicit substance, todayâs street drug Molly is beyond contaminated. According to the New York DEA, a mere 13 percent of Molly seized within the past four years has contained even a trace of MDMA. Most of the stockpiles seized were created from dangerous contaminants such as Methylone, MDPV, 4-MEC, 4-MMC, Pentedrone and MePP.
MDMA typically provides users with a sense of euphoria, and occasionally acts as a mild psychedelic. The street drug Molly, using lab chemicals may induce some sense of euphoria, however has also caused an increase in heartbeat, high blood pressure, blood vessel constriction which leads to irregular body temperatures, prolonged panic attacks, psychosis, and seizures.
Due to the various contaminates found in todayâs street drug Molly, users should be warned of the potentially devastating side effects. This drug is created with such variation of ingredients that there is no way to tell exactly what the effects will be in each instance. Much of the synthetic chemicals come from China, which are then cut with additional ingredients once brought to the U.S. and before it is sold.
This epidemic mostly affects teenagers from 12 to 17, and is a massive problem in the raver scene. Ravers hold âundergroundâ parties where, as Ecstasy used to be the drug of choice, the drug Molly has taken its place due to its supposed purity. Many countries wish to crack down further on MDMA, however with the potential medicinal effects in some cases, perhaps education on the dangerous effects would be a better place to start.
